First vocals on this track were laid down yesterday, and hence the first version of this song being posted. This is the first track post “Fire Fire Fire EP” to be worked on, and while we were looking through our “sketch” folder yesterday we realized we’ve got another four or so songs to work on in the near future.

Most likely we’ll try to finish this track before moving on, we’ve still got some work to do on the ending of this song, and this is a very rough mix, so there will be more work to do on the vocal track as well.

It didn’t take long for Anders to make a new mix for this one. Nothing much has changed however, just slightly more bass and a more polished sound.

Another recording of this song. Yeah, who knew? :)

We performed an advanced microphone test on these vocals. You can read more about that test here.

All in all, I am much happier with this mix and the sound of the vocals now. Before I felt that they were muddled but now it cuts nicely through. What do you think?

New remix of this song. Anders did some tweaking and replaced the “wimpy” guitar with a piano in the chorus. I replaced the glockenspiel in the break with FM bells straight out of a Paul Young nightmare I had about the year 1986. What do you think?

Måns and I spent the evening in the studio mixing Fire Fire Fire for (hopefully) the last time. We improved the vocal sound and generally tweaked levels and the arrangement.

Anders made a new mix and worked over the vocal sound to make it less muffled (thanks!) and also replaced the bass sound with the one he used originally. This mix sounds a lot better and now I’m thinking I may not have to re-record the vocals after all.

This is the first vocal take on Fire Fire Fire. I wrote the lyrics and recorded the vocals keeping a certain moment in my head, using the phrase Anders had already made up for the song (Fire Fire Fire). The mix is pretty rough and I have thrown in a snare which will most likely upset Anders. :)

I don’t know if the snare really should go there, but I feel like something should fill that space. If not a snare, then what?

Studio Projects B1

This is the mic we most often use for the lead vocals. There are a lot of good large diaphragm condenser microphones for about $100, and I guess this is just one of them. But I like the design, and it got good reviews when Swedish music magazine Studio tested it. They sound a bit harsh around 5kHz, but that is pretty useful. I’ve got two of them, so we also use them for stereo recordings of piano and as drum overheads.

Måns had an idea to put a delay with lots of feedback on the last words in each phrase in the verse, so I tried that. Sounds kind of nice but maybe shouldn’t be on every phrase. Also I added a guitar melody to the middle 8. Not so sure about that one, I think it needs to be more agressive.
