Not Enough For Me

Yes, there is rumbling in the Moon Palace world, finally! We’ve been getting busy in the new year by inviting a couple of friends to sit with us and hopefully come with new, fresh ideas for songs and sound.

So far, 2012 is offering a couple of new songs, the first one to get close to the finish line is “Not Enough For Me” – enjoy a sneak peek here!

Dancing On My Own vs How Soon Is Now?

Finally it’s time to reveal what we’ve been working on over the last few weeks!

This cover of Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own” started out as a more electronic take on the already great track but as we worked on the break, we realized another song would fit perfectly in with the mood of the track, and with the message of the lyrics, and so “How Soon Is Now” by The Smiths was mixed in for good measure.

This is the first Moon Palace track produced after the 2009 release of “Fire Fire Fire EP”.

Left Behind

This song is based on a chord sequence and a specific piano sound repeating over and over, creating the foundation for the sound. Anders added some really nice synth bass grooves and a beautiful guitar melody at the end of the song, and we recorded all of the “live” parts during one session in the studio, complete with vocals.

Fire Fire Fire

Underachievers

This song is nearing completion. After a couple of attempts at finding just the right structure for the song, including where to put the chorus part, which is all that I had when I brought this song to Moon Palace, we decided on a 6/8 shuffle and a more heavy, thick, electronic sound for the bassline.

We are currently working with some of the effects for the song, including some kind of distorted delay effect for the vocal parts, and some more guitar parts for the middle eight.

Silver Night

This song is nearing completed status. However, this mix is crazy since Anders recorded an electric bass but we forgot to remove the synth bass from the mix. It was late. And that’s the story.

Anyway, Silver Night is the first track where I was working with the vocals in a new way. Being prone to sing in a more “classic” fashion, I wanted to experiment some with finding a more expressive voice. Did I succeed? I’m not sure yet.

If You Don’t Know Why

This song started life as a sketch by Anders called “Airwaves“. It’s a somewhat different sound for Moon Palace, but that’s what this whole thing is all about – finding out what happens when we make the music we want to make.

An interesting thing about this song is that Anders had made the sketch and envisioned the vocals as slow, floating on top of the busy background. Since I had no idea, I went with what I felt like after listening to the sketch, which is the faster, rockier sound we’ve ended up with. I’d still like to know how the original idea for the vocals would have sounded.

Looking For Trouble

This song was recorded during our summer 2007 visit to Anders’ family cottage in Småland, southern Sweden. During our weekend in the (cold!) house, we worked on two songs, but only the second song turned into something we could use.

This song is not really completed, but we have started working on other songs since. We’ll see if we revisit Looking For Trouble at a later point.

Without A Heart

This recording is a couple of years old by now, and it represents a different sound and direction for Moon Palace. More acoustic-sounding, more low-key and sensitive.

So this is probably the only song you’ll hear from us that is sung in Swedish. This song is special because it was the first music collaboration between us for a very long time. I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to write in Swedish or English, but I switched to English after this recording. Force of habit, really. I still think Swedish would be the way to go, but it is much, much harder to write in your own language, since the words have to make sense when you fully understand them…
